Gooseneck hitches are used in pickup trucks in the same way as a 5th wheel hitch. The difference is that a gooseneck hitch uses a ball & coupler instead of a kingpin & pin receiver.
Gooseneck hitches are used to tow various loads, such as horse trailers and other agricultural trailers. Gooseneck hitches usually have a maximum weight capacity of 25,000 or 30,000 lbs. You should purchase a gooseneck hitch with a towing capacity that exceeds your trailer.
The goose neck style provides more stability, since the weight of the tongue rests directly on the truck bed over the rear axles. The truck can, therefore, more easily carry heavier loads.
Because the goose neck trailer is connected in the bed of the truck and not to the bumper, it has a tight turning radius.
Another advantage to gooseneck hitches is that many have the ability to 'fold-down' when not in use. Others, install under the pick-up bed. This lets you use your truck bed unobstructed from the gooseneck when you want to carry cargo in the bed.
Gooseneck hitches attach to your truck bed with custom or universal rails. These are usually sold separately and are made specific to your vehicle. They bolt easily to your truck frame, usually in existing holes, so no welding is required. Universal rails are also made that will fit most vehicles with little drilling required.
